Sunset in Palmy
Sunset in Palmy

Week One

Well we have been unexpectedly productive this first week in NZ. We already managed to drive from Auckland down to Palmerston North, making sure to keep left while driving from the right side of the car. Ian got the hang of it pretty quickly, and I haven't had much trouble either. We still tend to hit the windshield wipers when trying to use turn signals, as those are also on the opposite side of the steering wheel!

We've had a wonderful time exploring Palmy, and have had some delicious coffee and tasty treats so far. Everyone we have interacted with in shops and at cafes have been amazingly pleasant. Our airbnb jet tub has really helped keep my sore muscles from seizing up after walking many miles (even more kilometers!) each day.

We found a good Toyota Hilux to drive while we're in NZ, which should help when getting around to complete all my practical experience on farms around NZ. We've also found some nice, furnished accomodation for me on campus in a quiet area so I can focus on school in the next few months.

I will be getting to meet all of my other vet classmates in the next few weeks, and finally get some hands on practice with animal handling and exams! I'm super excited to pet some cows. I'm also trying to befriend any animals I meet on walks, mostly dogs but a few very nice kitties.

I certainly miss my pets back home, but thankfully my big brother Jon has things well cared for while we're gone. I think Potter and Mango really appreciate his quiet nature and love of sleep, as well as basking on the deck.
